Encounters: Artistic and scientific approaches to investigating the world around us
The Sound Collectors Lab will next month be presenting Workshop 3 ‘Entanglements with intangible materials: process and design in sound and science’ featuring Dr Rosemary Mardling (Astrophysicist, School of Physics and Astronomy) and Erkki Veltheim (Composer/Performer/Director), as part of the Encounters: Artistic and scientific approaches to investigating the world around us series.
This series is designed to maximise opportunities for conversation and connection between artists and scientists working with experimental methodologies in their research practice. Both disciplines focus on asking questions about unknown - often invisible or intangible - aspects of our universe, and engage creative and experimental methods to explore these questions and to reveal their findings to others. In both disciplines, researchers develop approaches to navigate uncertainty and indeterminacy that arise during the unfolding of research projects. Artistic research offers alternatives to traditional research methodologies, outputs, and forms of knowledge, and creative ways of drawing attention to social and environmental issues, events, and phenomena in our physical and natural world.
In each session, one artist and one scientist will respond to a topic with links to each field. Their presentations will be followed by a 45 minute discussion by the whole workshop group, guided by me. An emphasis will be placed on investigating the methodological overlaps between disciplines. It is anticipated that these sessions will inform the development of an interdisciplinary intensive bringing pairs of arts and science researchers together.
Each session will be accompanied by a pre-activity (such as a reading, listening, or viewing task) and paired with a performance connected with the session topic (performance details will be provided upon registration and attendance is optional). Both the pre-activity and performance activity are designed as aids in stimulating responses, discussion, and ideas related to the topic.
