2022 Day of Percussion: 25 September
The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance invites percussionists to our Day of Percussion on Sunday 25 September! It will include two venues full of workshops, clinics, masterclasses and a concert, and a percussion shop open all day. This is a free event, suitable for school and university students, emerging professionals, and percussion enthusiasts of all ages. REGISTER HERE
All percussionists at all levels are warmly invited to participate and perform in the following events throughout the day:
Snare drum essentials -
Orchestra Victoria Principal Percussionist Mat Levy guides us through a range of snare drum warm-ups, chop-busters and technique-builders designed to assist students to develop their technique, speed and sound. An interactive session suitable for percussionists and drummers at secondary and tertiary level. BYO sticks and practice pad!
Improvisation and composition using graphic scores -
Sydney-based percussionist and creative Niki Johnson introduces graphic notation, and leads the group through a hands-on ‘create your own score’ workshop. Suitable for all levels, on any percussive/drums instrument.
Approaches to movement at the drumset -
Led by James McLean.
Vibraphone virtuosity workshop -
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the invention of the vibraphone in 2022, Percussion Coordinator Dr Louise Devenish will demonstrate a range of musical, technical and creative techniques for vibraphone through performance and discussion. Towards the end of this extended session, up to three students will be invited to perform and workshop solo vibraphone or solo marimba pieces in open masterclass format. This class is suitable for secondary and tertiary level students.
African drumming workshop -
A fun and energetic hands-on workshop using djembes and duns, led by Rhythms of Life directors and performers Mohamed and Anna Camara. Suitable for all skill levels. Maximum participant number is 25.
Percussion ensembles concert performance -
Featuring Monash University Percussion, ANAM Percussion and Melbourne University ensembles!
